About Taff Rocks

Taff Rocks began as a small, informal rock painting group — a simple idea built on creativity, kindness, and community spirit. Over time, both our communities and our organisation have grown, and Taff Rocks continues to evolve to meet the needs of the people around us.

Like many community projects, we first connected through social media before expanding into community workshops with the support of Invest Local Ynysowen. These workshops were created to make the global “rocking” phenomenon accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances, because creativity should never be out of reach.

In today’s fast-paced world, many people feel overwhelmed by pressure, stress, and the challenges of everyday life. Creative activities provide an opportunity to slow down, focus, and reconnect with yourself. Art has long been recognised for its positive impact on wellbeing, and while the facilitators at Taff Rocks are not art therapists, we understand the value creativity can bring as part of a healthy self-care routine.

Taff Rocks was born in the former Welsh mining communities of Aberfan and Merthyr Vale, alongside the River Taff and the famous Taff Trail. From these roots, we have built a welcoming and inclusive community open to everyone.

Our mission is to improve lives and strengthen community connections through freestyle workshops and structured creative tuition that encourage fun, inspiration, self-expression, and creativity. By offering activities that connect generations, promote therapeutic art, and spread kindness and joy, we aim to make a positive difference — one step, one smile, and one rock at a time.

Our charitable objective is the advancement of education for the public benefit within Merthyr Tydfil County Borough — particularly, though not exclusively, in Aberfan, Merthyr Vale, and surrounding areas. We do this by fostering appreciation and understanding of the arts through workshops, classes, seminars, training opportunities, and other creative activities determined by our trustees.

Although our roots lie along the River Taff, you do not need to live nearby to be part of Taff Rocks. Our community welcomes people from anywhere in the world, and rocks can be painted, hidden, discovered, and shared across the globe.

The Taff Trail itself stretches from Cardiff Bay in the south, through the Brecon Beacons, and north towards Brecon, following National Cycle Route 8. Along this route and beyond, painted rocks have become symbols of creativity, connection, and surprise.

Across the UK, the painted rock movement has grown rapidly, bringing families and communities together through a simple, wholesome activity that encourages people away from screens and into shared creative experiences.

While Taff Rocks is now expanding beyond painted stones into wider creative activities, rock art continues to offer many benefits:

Promotes wellbeing and self-care,
Strengthens fine motor skills,
Encourages creativity and imagination,
Provides an inclusive activity for all abilities,
Inspires kindness, sharing, and community spirit,
Supports learning through geography, travel, and storytelling as rocks journey from place to place.

Most importantly, creativity provides an accessible and valuable form of mental health self-care.

You do not need to be the next Van Gogh to take part. From stick figures to flowers, doodles to detailed masterpieces, every painted rock has the power to brighten someone’s day.

If you have family, friends, or pen pals elsewhere in the UK or overseas, why not invite them to paint and hide a rock too? You never know where a Taff Rock might travel — or whether it may eventually find its way home again.

If you are reading this, then rock art is for you. The person beside you? It is for them too. Taff Rocks is for everyone — any age, any background, any ability. Creativity has no limits, and neither does community.

The Business Bit

From April 2019 to December 2020, Taff Rocks operated as a non-profit organisation with its own constitution, dedicated bank account, and management committee.

In December 2020, Taff Rocks officially registered with the Charity Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). We continue to operate on a non-profit basis, with all funds raised or donated being used solely to support our charitable objectives and the ongoing running of the organisation.

Founding Members

Taff Rocks was originally founded by a mother-and-daughter team during a summer afternoon in 2018, while enjoying a rare spell of Welsh sunshine in the garden. Both had caring responsibilities and were looking for a creative and meaningful way to spend their time together. One brought the idea, the other came up with the name, and shortly afterwards the Facebook group was created.

In 2019, they brought together a group of like-minded individuals to help develop and manage the public-facing side of the project. This group went on to become the founding trustees.
